In Tudor England, clothing was far more than a fashion statement—it was the law. The government believed that what you wore revealed your social rank, wealth, and place in society. To prevent commoners from dressing like nobles, a complex set of "sumptuary laws" dictated exactly which fabrics, colors, furs, jewels, and garments different classes were allowed to wear.
